Continued investment is key to affordable housing
As the general election looms, Colne Housing Society, the Colchester based provider of social housing, has highlighted the importance of continued investment in the building of affordable homes.
With the recent publication of the election manifestos still fresh in people’s minds, the society is warning that the escalating housing crisis should be a priority for whichever political party takes government.
In the year 2008/2009, housing associations were responsible for building 118,000 homes, half the number actually needed, and if the housing budget is not ring-fenced and protected, then up to 560,000 planned affordable homes may be at risk over the next decade.
The current election campaign is taking place against a backdrop of some startling statistics: 4.5 million people are currently on housing waiting lists, the average age of a first-time buyer is now 37, with the average deposit having reached £30,000 and half a million people are living in overcrowded conditions. Add to this unemployment reaching 3.2 million and the situation becomes untenable.
Mark Powell Davies, Chief Executive Colne Housing, commented, ”A home is one of the most basic of human needs and it is becoming harder and harder for many people to secure an affordable one. Regardless of the election promises of the three main political parties, it is essential that funding for social housing is maintained to enable housing associations to increase the supply of desperately needed affordable homes.”
