Rural housing and health
Dedham is a picturesque village in the heart of Constable Country in Essex. However, its desirability and the fact that it is within easy commuting distance of several centres of population mean that house prices are sky high.
Colne Housing was first approached in July 2003 by a local farmer who offered to make land available to build a doctor’s surgery, together with affordable homes for rent. The local doctor’s practice was occupying premises that would shortly have to be vacated as they would not comply with Disability Discrimination Act requirements.
Based in Manningtree Road, Dedham, the Colne Housing project has been developed over the past three years and was built with the help of grants from Essex Development and Regeneration Agency, EEDA, the Housing Corporation and a parish grant.
The Society worked closely with the parish council and other community groups to ensure that it met local requirements. The building, which provides three affordable homes for local people, and a health facility let to a community group, was completed in 2006.
